How to Specify a Page Number Within a Citation

Applies to: Documents editor

When you quote or closely paraphrase a specific passage, citation styles like APA and Chicago require a page number alongside the reference — for example, (Smith, 2020, p. 42) or (Smith, 2020, pp. 42–45).

In MonsterWriter, you add this as a "suffix" or "locator" to the citation.

Examples

Single page: p. 42

Page range: pp. 42–45

Chapter: chap. 3

Adding a page number to a citation

  1. 1

    Insert the citation

Add your citation as usual via the citation dialog.

  2. 2

    Open the citation for editing

Click the citation in your document to select it, then open the edit view.

  3. 3

Find the suffix or locator field

In the citation edit dialog, look for a "Suffix" or "Page" field.

  4. 4

    Enter the page reference

Type your locator — for example, "p. 42" or "pp. 42–45". MonsterWriter will include it in the formatted output according to the active citation style.

  5. 5

    Save and close

The citation in your document updates to include the page number.

Style-specific formatting

How page numbers appear in the output depends on your chosen citation style. APA renders p. 42 as part of the parenthetical. Chicago footnotes include the page at the end of the note. MonsterWriter applies the correct format automatically when you export.
